Foghorn are from Fredrikstad in south-eastern Norway. Situated at the mouth of Norway’s longest river, Fredrikstad has proud maritime traditions. (Nicknamed “planktown”, it was once a key port for the export of wood to continental Europe)

It is this maritime heritage that Foghorn celebrate in their music. Consisting of two Norwegians and a Englishman, Foghorn draw on both Norwegian and Anglo-American traditions and combine traditional material with more modern songs. Powerful, rhythmic harmony singing is at the core of Foghorn’s performance, sometimes “a cappella” and sometimes accompanied by guitar, double bass and concertina.

Englishman Richard Burgess came to Norway as a young man in the 70’s and never returned. Since then he has made a name for himself as a singer and musician, both solo and in groups like Doggerland, Five Men in a Boat and FatDog. In Foghorn Richard usually sings lead vocals and plays guitar or concertina.

Kristian Torp from Fredrikstad is Foghorn's youngest recruit - and the only one with a tattoo! A sound technician in his day job, Kristian also plays bass in the artrock band Gazpacho. In Foghorn he plays double bass and sings. 

Local hero and former football player, Jon Buer from Fredrikstad has long been a linchpin of his home town’s rich choral life, not least in Glomma Swingers and the folk choir KorLuren. In Foghorn, Jon sings the tenor part and shakes the occasional egg!

Tore Lia was Foghorn's stalwart bassplayer and bass-singer for nearly 30 years until his death in 2020. A good friend and a good singer - he is not forgotten!

Foghorn have sung together for over twenty-five years and have performed extensively at festivals and concerts both in and outside Norway. In 2004 they released their only album so far, “A Thousand Times Adieu” – to a rapturous reception! In 2020 the album was released on Spotify, Tidal, iTunes, Napster etc.
